The government’s September 2026 EPFO update raises the monthly wage ceiling for mandatory coverage from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000. For a covered employee contributing at 12% on the ceiling, the employee contribution is ₹3,000 per full month. PF is a retirement saving contribution; it is different from income tax.
What changed in September 2026?
The Cabinet approved the higher ceiling on 16 September. A later Labour Ministry briefing says it was notified on 17 September 2026. That distinction matters: an approval announcement and the start of payroll implementation are separate steps. This guide and calculator cover full wage months after the change; September transition adjustments should follow the employer’s EPFO instructions.
Which salary figure should you enter?
Use your monthly PF wages from the payroll record. This normally includes basic pay, dearness allowance and other applicable wage components. Gross salary and CTC are not interchangeable with PF wages. Do not assume that every employer uses a flat percentage of CTC to determine the legal wage base. If your payslip does not show the base, ask payroll to confirm it.
Employee EPF and employer EPF/EPS
Under the usual 12% arrangement, your employee contribution goes to EPF. The employer makes its own contribution, and an eligible pension member’s EPS amount comes out of that employer share. At the revised ceiling, the EPS portion is up to ₹2,083 per month. Pension eligibility depends on membership history and applicable scheme rules; selecting “No EPS” in the calculator sends the whole employer contribution to EPF.
| Monthly PF wages | Employee 12% | Employer EPS | Employer EPF |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹15,000 | ₹1,800 | ₹1,250 | ₹550 |
| ₹20,000 | ₹2,400 | ₹1,666 | ₹734 |
| ₹25,000 | ₹3,000 | ₹2,083 | ₹917 |
| ₹40,000, contribution capped | ₹3,000 | ₹2,083 | ₹917 |
| ₹40,000, agreed full-wage basis | ₹4,800 | ₹2,083 | ₹2,717 |
Examples assume an eligible EPS member, a full contribution month, usual 12% employee/employer rates and rounding to whole rupees. The 8.33% calculation at ₹15,000 is ₹1,249.50 before rounding. Higher-pension arrangements are excluded.
Does the ceiling mean everyone must pay exactly ₹3,000?
No. Below the ceiling, a lower PF wage base produces a lower contribution. Higher-wage contributions can apply where agreed and permitted. Existing EPFO members continue as members; a first-time entrant above the ceiling should confirm coverage and any joint-option requirements. Some eligible establishments use 10%, which is available as a separate calculator setting.
Voluntary PF, annual totals and tax
Additional voluntary employee contributions are separate from the usual PF deduction and are not automatically matched by the employer. The annual figure in our tool is twelve identical monthly contributions, not a prediction of interest or a withdrawal entitlement. EPF, EPS, EDLI and administration charges have different purposes; employer insurance and administration costs should not be presented as an additional employee EPF deduction.
The employee PF deduction should not be subtracted again as an 80C deduction when estimating ordinary salary income under the new tax regime. PF withdrawal taxation and taxable interest on high employee contributions need separate assessment and are outside this contribution tool.
